{"id":172829,"date":"2020-01-08T22:17:30","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T19:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whaj24.com\/?p=172829"},"modified":"2020-01-08T22:17:30","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T19:17:30","slug":"iranian-leader-calls-missile-attack-a-slap-at-us-bases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mennews.net\/?p=172829","title":{"rendered":"Iranian leader calls missile attack a \u2018slap\u2019 at US bases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Whaj 24 &#8211; TEHRAN, Iran (AP) \u2014 Iran struck back at the United States early Wednesday for killing its most powerful military commander, firing a barrage of ballistic missiles at two Iraqi military bases that house American troops in what the Iranian supreme leader said was a \u201cslap\u201d against the U.S. military presence in the region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"afs:Content:8390381823\" class=\"Component-hubLink-0-2-148\" data-key=\"hub-link-embed\"><span class=\"title-0-2-40\">Full Coverage:\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"link-0-2-41 overrideArticle\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/tag\/Iran\">Iran<\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The dramatic blast of more than a dozen missiles caused no casualties, however, and U.S. President Donald Trump said hours later that Iran \u201cappears to be standing down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">It was a signal that both sides were stepping away from an immediate spiral of more direct exchanges that could throw the Middle East into great turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Speaking at the White House, Trump said the U.S. would impose new \u201cpunishing economic sanctions\u201d on Iran to force it to stop its nuclear program and what he called its \u201chostilities\u201d in the region. But he also said Washington was open to a deal with Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Iran, in turn, appeared to have calibrated its attack to avoid stoking further U.S. retaliation, giving some early warning to its Iraqi allies to avoid casualties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cLast night they received a slap,\u201d Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said of the Americans in a speech after the missile strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">He made clear that Iran\u2019s actions were in response to the U.S. killing of\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/3bb7af59e8b1bfd3e15222a98395ee85\">Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani<\/a>, whose death last week in a drone strike in Baghdad prompted angry calls for vengeance and drew massive crowds of Iranians to the streets in mourning. What is important is that the corrupt presence of America in this region comes to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Satellite imagery showed at least five impact sites on the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq\u2019s western Anbar province, each leaving charred blast marks that damaged or destroyed buildings. One obliterated a structure in a row of buildings next to a line of helicopters, though none of the aircraft appeared damaged, according to the imagery provided by Planet Labs, Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Iran\u2019s foreign minister tweeted that Tehran had taken and \u201cconcluded proportionate measures in self-defense,\u201d adding that Tehran did \u201cnot seek escalation\u201d but would defend itself against further aggression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said he received notification from Iran just after midnight that its retaliation \u201cwas starting or would start soon\u201d and would focus only on U.S. positions. The militaries of Finland and Lithuania, which had personnel at one of the targeted bases, said they received information about an imminent attack and had time to move to shelters or leave the base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Iran\u2019s attacks \u201cappeared designed for maximum domestic effect with minimum escalatory risk,\u201d said Henry Rome, analyst with Eurasia Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cFor a president who wants to avoid a war in the Middle East during an election year, the Iranians have provided an off-ramp he will likely take,\u201d Rome said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-image-0-2-144\" data-key=\"media-placeholder\">\n<p><a class=\"galleryModal-0-2-159\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c7116313efdb56f4e928289faa1ad8cd\/gallery\/816b3cd8f9554d3d852a1353ad1dd408\" data-key=\"media-placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-0-2-126\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/afs-prod\/media\/816b3cd8f9554d3d852a1353ad1dd408\/1000.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-caption Component-root-0-2-141\" data-key=\"embed-caption\">AP Graphic<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/b687c7be0a03c2c6c53397c2f9406f24\">Tensions have risen steadily<\/a>\u00a0in the Middle East since Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/1851a415c0045108e2f41804ba30e2c7\">nuclear deal with world powers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The Iranian attacks on the bases marked the first time in recent years that Iran has directly attacked U.S. positions rather than through\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/e15c6b470ff3baeaa99a4dfc77ca3ef2\">proxies in the region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Tehran and Washington have been at odds since Iran\u2019s 1979 Islamic Revolution and the subsequent U.S. Embassy takeover and hostage crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Adding to the chaos, a Ukrainian airplane with 176 people crashed after takeoff just outside Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing all on board, Iranian and Ukrainian officials said. Iran said mechanical issues were suspected, although Ukraine declined to offer a cause while an investigation continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The Boeing 737-800 had taken off from Imam Khomeini International Airport, bound for the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The plane carried 167 passengers and nine crew members. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko said there were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians on board \u2014 the Ukrainian nationals included two passengers and the nine crew. The rest were Swedish, Afghan, German and British nationals<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The U.S. Federation Aviation Administration earlier warned of a \u201cpotential for miscalculation or mis-identification\u201d for civilian aircraft in the Persian Gulf. The agency barred U.S. carriers from flying over areas of Iraqi, Iranian and some Persian Gulf countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The U.S. has been deploying more troops in the region. U.S. Gulf allies that host thousands of American troops are concerned about a direct conflict. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have called for de-escalation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cThe situation is not currently a war situation,\u201d UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al-Mazrouei said, stressing that Iran is a neighbor and the last thing the country wants is more regional tension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard warned the U.S. and its allies against retaliating over the missile attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cWe are warning all American allies, who gave their bases to its terrorist army, that any territory that is the starting point of aggressive acts against Iran will be targeted,\u201d the Guard said in a statement carried by Iran\u2019s state-run IRNA news agency. It also threatened Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The Iranians fired 15 missiles Wednesday, two U.S. officials said. Ten hit Ain al-Asad and one targeted a base in Irbil in Iraq\u2019s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. Four failed, said the officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly about a military operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cAs we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners and allies in the region,\u201d said Jonathan Hoffman, an assistant to the U.S. defense secretary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-embed-0-2-156 Component-block-0-2-147\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"ap-embedain-al-asad-air-base\" src=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/beforeafter\/ain-al-asad-air-base\" width=\"100%\" height=\"566 px\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"social-caption Component-root-0-2-158\">Satellite image shows the damage caused from an Iranian missile strike. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the attacks, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not have permission to talk to journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Ain al-Asad was first used by American forces after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, and it later was used by American troops in the fight against the Islamic State group. It houses about 1,500 U.S. and coalition forces. Trump went there in December 2018, making his first presidential visit to troops in the region. Vice President Mike Pence also has visited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">As Iran reels from the loss of life in the plane crash, it is also contending with the aftermath of a deadly stampede Tuesday at Soleimani\u2019s funeral in his hometown of Kerman, killing 56 people and injuring more than 200. Shortly after Wednesday\u2019s missile attack, Soleimani\u2019s shroud-wrapped remains were lowered into the ground as mourners wailed at the grave site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">\u201cWe tell our enemies that we will retaliate, but if they take another action we will set ablaze the places that they like and are passionate about,\u201d Hossein Salami, who commands the Revolutionary Guard, told a crowd in Kerman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The general\u2019s funeral procession in major cities spanning three days was an unprecedented honor for Soleimani, seen by Iranians as a national hero for his work leading the Guard\u2019s expeditionary Quds Force in the face of U.S. pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">The U.S. blames him for killing U.S. troops in Iraq. The Trump administration alleges he\u2019d been plotting new attacks just before he was killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Many Sunni Muslims in the region, however, view him as a destabilizing figure who commanded\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/402a1524b1ba9ea6096790d1d0fb0ce7\">dangerous and deadly Shiite proxy militias<\/a>. Soleimani led forces supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad in that country\u2019s civil war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Since his killing Jan. 3, Tehran has abandoned the remaining limits of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. In Iraq, lawmakers and pro-Iranian factions in parliament have voted to oust American troops from Iraqi territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-150 Component-p-0-2-142\">Kuwait said Wednesday that its state-run KUNA news agency\u2019s Twitter account was hacked and posted a false story on U.S. troops withdrawing from the nation. The fake alert went out on its account, Kuwait said.
