Middle East News Network: A U.S. official told Axios that the nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran in Geneva have \u201cmade progress,\u201d but stressed that \u201cthere are still many details that need to be discussed.\u201d
\nThe official revealed that the Iranian delegation, following its talks with envoys of President Donald Trump \u2014 Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff \u2014 offered to return within the next two weeks with detailed proposals \u201cto address some of the remaining gaps in our positions.\u201d
\nFor his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as \u201cserious, constructive, and positive,\u201d claiming that \u201cgood progress was made compared to the previous meeting, and we now have a clearer path forward.\u201d
\nAraghchi told Iranian state television: \u201cVarious ideas were presented and discussed seriously. In the end, we were able to reach a general understanding on a set of guiding principles, on the basis of which we will move forward and begin working on the text of a potential agreement. This does not mean we can reach an agreement quickly, but at least the process has begun.\u201d
\nMeanwhile, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who mediated the talks, confirmed that the second round of negotiations concluded with \u201cgood progress toward defining common objectives and the relevant technical issues,\u201d describing the spirit of the meetings as \u201cconstructive.\u201d
\nHe added: \u201cTogether, we made serious efforts to identify a number of guiding principles for a final agreement. There is still much work to be done, and the parties left with clear next steps ahead of the next meeting.\u201d
\nAccording to Araghchi, both sides agreed to work on draft texts for a potential agreement, exchange documents, and then set a date for the third round of negotiations.
\nThis diplomatic progress comes as the United States continues to build up its forces in the Middle East in preparation for a possible military option. In recent days, Trump has sent a second carrier strike group to the region, and more than 50 fighter jets \u2014 including F-35, F-22, and F-16 aircraft \u2014 have been deployed to the area within the past 24 hours, according to open-source flight radar data and a U.S. official.
