Middle East News Network: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will not become a full member of the \u201cPeace Council\u201d established by U.S. President Donald Trump, and will instead participate as an observer.
\nSpeaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Sheinbaum said: \u201cWe issued an official statement affirming that we recognize the pursuit of peace within any framework that is created. However, when it comes to peace in the Middle East and Palestine, and considering our recognition of the State of Palestine, it is important that both states \u2014 Israel and Palestine \u2014 be represented, and this will not be the case at the meeting.\u201d
\nShe explained that Mexico had received a proposal to join the initiative either as a full member or as an observer.
\nShe added that Mexico decided to send its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H\u00e9ctor Vasconcelos, to the first meeting of the \u201cPeace Council\u201d in an observer capacity.
\nIt is worth noting that the first meeting of the \u201cPeace Council,\u201d formed at the initiative of President Donald Trump to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and discuss other international issues, is scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C. on February 19.
