Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s First Comment on Western Reports Alleging He Orchestrated a Coup Against Khamenei

Middle East News Network: The office of former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani issued a statement describing foreign media reports about him as false and fabricated, claiming they are part of psychological operations backed by American and Israeli sources.
The statement said: “In recent days, completely false information was published in two American and European newspapers, containing baseless allegations about Dr. Hassan Rouhani, former President of Iran during the eleventh and twelfth administrations, turning the matter into imaginary scenarios rather than factual reporting.”
It added: “By publishing false news and relying on anonymous sources, the two newspapers — Le Figaro and The New York Times — have undermined their professional credibility and cast doubt on the reliability of their other reports.”
The office further emphasized that “these fabricated reports about Rouhani, Dr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, and other political figures and officials in the country should be viewed as a continuation of psychological operations conducted by American and Israeli sources aimed at creating doubt and confusion among the Iranian public, complementing the policy of maximum pressure through economic sanctions and military threats.”
The statement also noted that “the fictional nature of the scenarios presented in Le Figaro and The New York Times was so evident that they received no reaction except from media outlets participating in this anti-Iran psychological campaign. This is not only evidence of public awareness and the intelligence of local media, but also proof of how detached those outlets are from the current realities, decision-making mechanisms, and political and security relations within Iran.”
Earlier, Le Figaro reported on an alleged coup attempt within the Iranian system targeting Supreme Leader **Ali Khamenei to prevent him from managing the crisis, just before the peak of protests that swept the country last January.
The newspaper also claimed that former President Hassan Rouhani led the plan alongside prominent figures from his previous government, including former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, as well as several clerics from the city of Qom and individuals close to the Revolutionary Guard. The main objective of the alleged meeting, according to the report, was to remove Khamenei from the decision-making circle.
