CNN Poll: 59% of Americans Oppose Strikes on Iran and Fear a Prolonged War

Middle East News Network: A new poll conducted by CNN revealed that nearly six in ten Americans oppose the United States’ decision to launch military operations against Iran, with most believing that a long-term military conflict between the two countries is likely.
The poll, conducted after the start of U.S. and Israeli operations, showed that a majority of Americans doubt President Donald Trump’s ability to properly manage the crisis.
According to the survey, 60% said they do not believe Trump has a clear plan for dealing with the situation, while 62% believe congressional approval should be required for any additional military action.
Only 27% said the United States had made sufficient diplomatic efforts before using force, while 39% believed not enough effort had been made, and 33% were unsure.
Overall, 59% of Americans oppose the initial strike on Iran, compared to 41% who support it. Strong opposition reached 31%, nearly double the rate of strong support, which stood at 16%.
Regarding the deployment of ground troops, only 12% expressed support, while 60% opposed the move and 28% remained uncertain.
The poll also indicated that a majority of Americans (56%) believe a prolonged conflict between the United States and Iran is likely, with 24% considering it highly likely.
Results showed strong partisan divisions: 77% of Republicans support the recent strikes, compared to 32% of independents and only 18% of Democrats. Meanwhile, 83% of Republicans expressed confidence that Trump has a clear strategy, in sharp contrast to independents and Democrats.
Within the Republican Party itself, a gap appears between supporters of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement and other Republicans, with MAGA supporters showing significantly higher backing for the military decision and greater trust in Trump.
The findings suggest that initial support within Trump’s political base contrasts with broader public opinion, which opposes the strikes across demographic groups, including gender, race, and age categories.
