United States: Suspect Arrested in Double Homicide That Killed U.S. Soldier and Ukrainian Refugee

Middle East News Network: U.S. authorities have arrested a suspect in a double homicide that shook the state of North Carolina, claiming the lives of a young Ukrainian refugee and her American soldier boyfriend.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina announced the arrest of Caleb Hayden Vosno, the primary suspect in the double murder of 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee Kateryna Tovmash and her 28-year-old boyfriend, U.S. Army soldier Matthew Wade.
Police stated that on the morning of February 14, they received a report of a shooting at a home in the Vass area of North Carolina.
Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered the bodies of the two victims. Authorities later confirmed that the deceased were Kateryna Tovmash, an immigrant from Ukraine who had been residing in Ohio, and her boyfriend Matthew Wade, an active-duty U.S. Army soldier from Hamilton, Mississippi.
Investigations revealed that the suspect, Vosno—who had previously been in a relationship with Tovmash—fled the crime scene to the state of Ohio, where authorities were able to track him down and arrest him.
Mikhail Tovmash, the brother of the slain refugee, shared details of the crime in an Instagram post, stating that his sister had been living in North Carolina with her younger brothers and sisters, whom she had been caring for.
He added that the suspect forced one of the children to wake Kateryna before opening fire on her and Wade while they were in bed.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances and motives behind the crime.
This incident comes amid a series of attacks targeting Ukrainian refugees in the United States. Previously, Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarotskaia was killed in September 2025 inside a train car in Charlotte, North Carolina.
