Mexico Declines Full Membership in Trump’s “Peace Council”

Middle East News Network: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will not become a full member of the “Peace Council” established by U.S. President Donald Trump, and will instead participate as an observer.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Sheinbaum said: “We issued an official statement affirming that we recognize the pursuit of peace within any framework that is created. However, when it comes to peace in the Middle East and Palestine, and considering our recognition of the State of Palestine, it is important that both states — Israel and Palestine — be represented, and this will not be the case at the meeting.”
She explained that Mexico had received a proposal to join the initiative either as a full member or as an observer.
She added that Mexico decided to send its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Héctor Vasconcelos, to the first meeting of the “Peace Council” in an observer capacity.
It is worth noting that the first meeting of the “Peace Council,” formed at the initiative of President Donald Trump to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and discuss other international issues, is scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C. on February 19.
