Trump Accuses the U.S. Supreme Court of Being Subject to Foreign Influence

Middle East News Network: U.S. President Donald Trump questioned the independence of the Supreme Court of the United States after it overturned the import tariffs and customs duties imposed by his administration, claiming that the Court is susceptible to foreign influence.
Earlier on Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a lawsuit challenging Trump’s tariffs, noting that the U.S. Congress holds the “exclusive” authority to impose import duties. The Court stated that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump used to impose tariffs on imports, does not grant him the authority to do so.
The U.S. President described the Court’s decision as a disgrace and indicated that he has an alternative plan.
Speaking during an unscheduled press conference at the White House, Trump said: “Individuals representing foreign interests, I believe, have undue influence — significant influence — over the Supreme Court, whether through intimidation, respect, or friendship. I’m not exactly sure.”
It is worth noting that Trump imposed his tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA).
The Supreme Court ruled that the current U.S. administration had interpreted this provision too broadly, while the Constitution clearly states that legislative authority in this matter rests “exclusively” with Congress.
