Largest Submarine Buildup Since World War II… Washington Expands Its Nuclear Capabilities at an Unprecedented Pace
Middle East News Network: U.S. Admiral William Houston revealed that the United States is currently implementing the largest submarine fleet construction program since the end of World War II.
The admiral confirmed that the annual production rate now exceeds even the peak levels of the Cold War, indicating an unprecedented acceleration in strengthening Washington’s naval military capabilities.
Houston, who serves as Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, explained during a discussion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies that “what we are doing now is the largest submarine buildup since World War II,” adding that the volume of work carried out annually in this field surpasses what was achieved during the period of intense military competition with the Soviet Union.
He noted that this expansion is part of a fast-tracked program to develop nuclear propulsion systems, enhancing the submarines’ ability to operate for longer durations and with greater efficiency, within a broader strategy to modernize naval power.
This comes alongside U.S. efforts to strengthen its nuclear arsenal. Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced that the country is currently supplying the military with more new nuclear weapons and implementing warhead modernization programs at the fastest pace since the Cold War. He also indicated that the fiscal year 2027 budget proposal includes a record investment of $27.44 billion to modernize the nuclear arsenal.
According to observers, these moves reflect an escalation in the global arms race amid rising tensions between major powers, as Washington seeks to reinforce its military superiority, particularly in the naval and nuclear domains.
